WEST COVINA – Santa Margarita baseball coach Chris Malec knew that Matthew Porchas was better than his last pitching performance against La Mirada last week.

The junior rebounded from that effort with a sterling effort Wednesday, pitching six shutout innings and just one hit allowed in the Eagles’ 3-0 win over host South Hills in a pool-play game of the Steakhouse Tournament.

Porchas, a junior who is committed to the University of Texas, gave up a double to South Hills’ leadoff hitter Marcos Rosales in the first inning, struck out seven, and yielded two walks. He retired 11 hitters in a row between the second and sixth innings.
